Kannan in fray for Assembly poll after 15 years

Most of the AINRC candidates file their nominations on the last day

Veteran politician and AIADMK leader P. Kannan on Friday filed his nomination papers for the May 16 Assembly election from Raj Bhavan constituency. A crowd puller and fiery orator, Mr. Kannan is testing his electoral fortunes from Raj Bhavan constituency in the Assembly elections after a gap of nearly 15 years.

Mr. Kannan last contested the Assembly polls in 1996 when he held the post of Home Minister till 2000. He was elected to the Rajya Sabha in 2009 elections.

As Friday was the last day for filing of nominations, Mr. Kannan, along with his supporters, took out a procession from his office on Mahatma Gandhi Road in a show of strength. He filed his papers before the Returning Officer Mohammed Mansoor at the Department of Local Administration here.

Candidates of the AINRC which released its second list on Friday also filed their papers before Returning Officers in various Assembly constituencies. Prominent among those who filed their nominations included Speaker V. Sabapathy, sitting Ministers N.G. Panneerselvam and T. Thiagarajan.

Mr. Sabapathy filed papers seeking re-election from Ariyankuppam while Mr. Panneerselvam and Mr. Thiagarajan filed papers from Oulgaret and Bahour Assembly segments respectively.

Welfare Minister P. Rajavelu who won the 2011 elections from Embalam (Reserved) Assembly segment shifted to neighbouring Nettapakkam (Reserved) constituency this time.

Priyanka, daughter of Agriculture Minister M. Chandrakasu filed papers from Nedungadu (Reserved) Assembly segment.

Estranged Congress MLAs- former Minister Theni C. Djeacoumar and P.R.N. Thirumurugan also filed their papers from Villianur and Karaikal (North) constituencies.
