A war of words broke out between M. Vaithianathan, Lawspet MLA and Parliamentary Secretary to the Chief Minister, and Jipmer Director T.S. Ravikumar on Wednesday over continued dumping of plastic waste at Jeevanandapuram in his constituency.

Mr. Vaithianathan said he received complaints from residents that miscreants were setting fire to the waste, and the smoke was affecting the people. As his phone calls to Dr. Ravikumar were futile, he came to meet the Jipmer Director on Wednesday to submit a memorandum. After being asked to wait for a long time, Mr. Vaithianathan barged into the office and raised the issue. Dr. Ravikumar said he was trying to curb the menace, and arguments ensued. Jipmer spokesman K. Makesh said the Director was constantly monitoring the situation. “We have even installed CCTV cameras in the area to curb the menace,” he said.

Meanwhile, Jipmer Administrative Staff Welfare Association staged a protest on the campus, demanding that vacancies be filled.
