M.K. Bhan, Jipmer president, on the Foundation Day celebration on Thursday said there is hope that a curriculum and model programme will be designed and piloted to train nurses in Jipmer-Karaikal to prescribe medicines at the health and wellness centres.
“The National Health Policy has proposed to set up health and wellness centres within 30 minutes of walking distance. This is a new version of sub-centres headed by nurse practitioners. At least six months training will be provided on clinical skills for nurses and a new cadre of graduate nurses will be created to serve in the health and wellness centres,” he said.
Dr. Bhan said the nurses, who have a three-year degree in nursing, will be trained for this programme. “This health and wellness centres will maintain a population health status driven by electronic system. Since Jipmer Karaikal is in a rural setting and is primarily focussed on medical education, we would like to have a centre to pilot the curriculum for this programme,” he said.
Recognising the commitment of nurses in Jipmer on the Foundation Day celebration, Dr. Bhan said the Foundation Day was a day to remember, who we are and what we stand for and what are the commitments.
“The most beautiful thing about today is that we respect and honour those people who actually deliver. Today is a day we salute those who actually serve, deliver and honour. I would like to salute the leadership of our nursing colleagues, it is because of them that Jipmer is clean and beautiful and patients are safe. They get treated scientifically, care and respect and there is this striving for perfection in Jipmer,” he said.
Dr. Bhan said that telemedicine had been a success as nearly 600 stroke patients were treated without doctors in Himachal Pradesh, Punjab and many States.
