Jipmer launches six-day course in epidemiology

Course is intended to train researchers and medical professionals

The Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (Jipmer) has launched a six-day short course in Basic Epidemiology and Biostatistics.

The course was initiated by the Department of Preventive and Social Medicine in line with its aim to improve the health of the community by sharing and imparting knowledge and expertise in epidemiology.

This is the eighth such short course and the programme will continue till Saturday.

Inaugurating the course, Dr. S. C. Parija, Director, Jipmer, stressed on the significance of research in effecting clinical information and advancing healthcare of population. He also urged the young researchers to undergo necessary training in significant areas of research to produce quality researchers for the benefit of the community.

Dr. Vishnu Bhat, Dean, Research, highlighted the importance of sound epidemiology principles in every step of research while designing protocols, conducting and publishing research.

This course is intended to train researchers and medical professionals in the basics of epidemiology and biostatistics that would help them in planning and conducting research relevant to our country’s health needs, said the course coordinator Dr. Jayalakshmy, Assistant Professor.

The workshops led by Dr. K.C. Premarajan, Professor and Head of Preventive and Social Medicine will focus on the areas of epidemiology, biostatistics, developing research protocol and critically evaluating research papers and includes lectures and hands on sessions.

Around 32 participants including faculty, residents and PhD scholars from Jipmer and other medical colleges from Puducherry, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Telangana and Andaman Nicobar are participating.
