JIPMER will look to develop its first line of patents to open up collaboration with industries on projects that will improve patient care, its Director Dr. S. C. Parija said on Friday.
In a press note issued after Jipmer filed its first patent application for one of its research works on Friday, Dr. Parija said securing patents would pave way for institute-industry collaboration for designing and bringing out improved diagnostic kits, procedures and treatment modalities for patient care. He noted that though JIPMER was yet to file any patent in spite of several ongoing research projects in various disciplines.
In fact, the process of patent development started about six months ago with the launch of an ‘Innovation Unit’ to encourage students and faculty towards applying for patents for their work. Subsequently, a team of faculty was sent to other centres of country for sensitisation and training.
This was followed by workshops and CMEs hosted by Jipmer for students and faculty. JIPMER also established an Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) Cell to streamline the whole process under direct supervision of the Director and came out with a ‘Jipmer IPR Policy’.
