Lieutenant Governor Kiran Bedi says the nomination of MLAs only strengthens democracy.

Welcoming the Madras High Court order dismissing the public interest litigation petition against the appointment of nominated MLAs, Lieutenant Governor Kiran Bedi said now it all depended on how soon the Speaker responded to the court direction.

She told media persons at Raj Nivas that the court had upheld the decisions taken by her on the basis of directions given by the Union Government on the issue of nominated MLAs.

The appointment of the three MLAs, she said, would only strengthen democracy. “It strengthens democracy. It increases governance, accountability and increases ground work for people through three more legislators,” she said.

Legal options

When sought her reaction on the move to appeal against the High Court order, she said they had every right to do so. “These are legal options available in the country,” Ms. Bedi said.

The nominated MLAs — V. Swaminthan, K.G. Shankar and S. Selva Ganapathy — met Ms. Bedi and thanked her.

Mr. Swaminthan told reporters that the government should implement the court order. The order had indicated with whom the ultimate power rested, he said. “Without wasting time, the government should implement the court order,” he said.

The decisions taken by the Lt. Governor had been proved to be right by the court.

Mr. Swaminathan promised to work for the welfare of people by working in close coordination with Centre.
