Houseboats, eco-cottages to lure tourists

With an eye to boost tourist arrivals in Puducherry, Chief Minister N. Rangasamy announced houseboats at the Chunnambar Boat House, eco-cottages on Paradise Island and e-rickshaws within the Boulevard area among projects in the 2015- 2016 budget speech on Wednesday. He also announced the development of two eco-tourist islands in Yanam.

Mr. Rangasamy said that the various projects and activities are expected to boost tourist arrivals by 12 per cent.

Other projects which were announced include the development of a walkway along the beach from Solai Nagar to the new lighthouse at an estimated cost of Rs. 10 crore.

There is also a proposal to beautify the sand dunes near the new lighthouse and develop the area as a tourist destination. He also made note of maintaining cleanliness at tourist spots and provision of toilet facilities.

Measures in enclaves

In Yanam, the development of the recreational park around the Yanam tower at a cost of Rs. 12.36 crore will be taken up this year, said Mr. Rangasamy.

The second phase of the riverside walkway and construction of a new guest house in Mahe will also be taken up this year.

Mr. Rangasamy also announced the second phase development of the Karaikal Ammaiyar temple tank. Tourist/ transport vehicle permits for Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam will soon be available with the Transport Departments in the respective regions.

He also announced a scheme for the publication of around 65 manuscripts at a cost of Rs. 10,000 each. Other measures under art and culture include fellowship grants to research scholars and financial assistance to new beneficiaries under the indigent artists scheme.
