Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) president Thol. Thirumavalavan has urged the government to hold elections to the local bodies in the Union Territory to revive democracy at the grassroots level. It would ensure availability of more central funds for implementing various schemes.

Talking to reporters here on Friday, Mr. Thirumavalavan said the government is shirking its responsibility by delaying the local body election. This will hamper development.

The rights of elected legislators and councillors could be clearly indicated through amendments by the government and the Centre, if necessary.

The government should also expeditiously implement Right to Education (RTE) in the UT so that children from poor families would benefit.

The National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme, which has been stopped, should also be revived.

Mr. Thirumavalavan appreciated the current initiatives of Lieutenant Governor Kiran Bedi for achieving prosperous Puducherry. Ms. Bedi’s participation in important people-oriented programmes has set an example for the governors of other states to follow suit.

He also wished Chief Minister V. Narayanasamy to win the by-elections. Mr. Narayanasamy’s rich political experience would be of help in the speedy development of Puducherry, he said.

Strong exception

Taking a strong exception to the comment against BSP chief Mayawati and the anti-Dalit stand of the BJP and the RSS, he said that a demonstration would be held in Chennai on July 25.

He also expressed disappointment over the lack of any special measures for the farmers in the Tamil Nadu budget presented on Thursday.

It lacked focus and there has been no announcement about closure of TASMAC shops and adoption of prohibition in a phased manner, he said.
