A history-sheeter was badly injured while he was allegedly making country-made bombs in a house in the tsunami quarters at Bommayarpalayam in Villupuram district. His name was given as S. Eli Kaarthi, 29, hailing from Vazhaikulam in Muthialpet in neighbouring Puducherry.

Kaarthi has over 10 criminal cases pending against him in various police stations in Puducherry. The blast occurred in a house in the tsunami quarters, which was rented out by Harikrishnan to Kaarthi two days ago. He had moved into the house with his wife Aruna and three-month-old girl child.

On hearing a loud noise at around 7.15 a.m., the neighbours alerted the police. The blast shattered the asbestos sheet of the house and blood was found splattered near the bathroom at the back of the house.

The wrist of Kaarthi was severed in the blast. Kaarthi was first admitted to the Pondicherry Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) hospital in Kalapet and then rushed to Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (Jipmer). His wife Aruna and daughter who were inside the house escaped unhurt.

The explosion was suspected to have occurred when he was making country-made bombs at the backyard of the house. Villupuram Superintendent of Police Jayakumar visited the house and conducted enquiries.

Police have begun investigations whether the accused was making bombs to settle scores with the gangsters.
