Gurmeet Singh has been appointed as the new Vice-Chancellor of Pondicherry University.

He is serving as Professor of Department of Chemistry of University of Delhi.

For the last one-and-a-half years, Anisha Basheer Khan was in-charge Vice-Chancellor.

According to the notification, Prof. Singh will hold the post for five years or until he attains the age of 70.

The non-appointment of a permanent Vice-Chancellor was a point of confrontation between a section of employees in the institution.

The Pondicherry University Employees Joint Action Committee had launched an agitation last month demanding that Ms. Khan be removed after the Kalapet police had booked a case against her under Section 120 B, 301, 381, 420 - cheating, 468 - forgery and 471 of IPC.

Unrest had been brewing in the university for lack of efforts to improve academic and infrastructure development in the institution over the last one year.
