The Traffic Police department is set to introduce global positioning system (GPS)-enabled electronic challaning system to collect fine from traffic rules violators on the spot.
Inspector General of Police Praveer Ranjan said, “We are contemplating introducing the e-challan system followed by Delhi police. The company supplied some equipment to us. Based on the performance, we may consider introducing such a system very soon.”
Traffic police in Delhi, Chennai and other places in the country are using a pocketbook-sized mini computer attached with a camera and a printer.
The camera is able to take pictures of the defaulter, number-plates, RC violations, unauthorized red beacons which act as necessary documentary evidence for reference.
These e-challan devices are connected to a central server where details are stored for future reference.
The e-challan system is also GPS-enabled, where the position of the prosecuting official is also available; along with a credit card swipe and driver’s licence swipe facility, making issuing and paying of challan easier.
Mr. Ranjan said already 50 closed circuit television cameras(CCTVs) have been installed at important junction of the city and the company was asked to complete the installation of 100(CCTVs) by end of December.
