Members of the Communist Party of India (CPI) on Monday staged a demonstration in front of the head office against the rise in prices of essential commodities.

The members led by CPI state secretary R. Viswanathan alleged that the Narendra Modi led BJP government had failed to curb inflation and the rise in prices of essential commodities.

Mr. Viswanathan said that on the one hand the Government was supporting the corporate companies and taking anti-people measures on the other.

The government had hiked rail fare and freight charges immediately after coming to power. The steep hike in essential commodities had severely affected the lower and middle class families.

The Government’s decision to reduce subsidy for fertilizers had affected farmers who were already facing drought like situation across the country.

The wrong economic policies followed by the BJP Government had resulted in the present situation, he said. The CPI also urged the Centre to intervene and control online trading to protect small vendors.
