The Tourism Department has sought funds from the Centre to implement its ambitious plan to develop six beaches of the Union Territory of Puducherry for eco-tourism activities.
In a proposal submitted to the Union Minister of State for Tourism, Shripad Naik, on Monday, Welfare and Tourism Minister P. Rajavelu said: “Beaches are the main attractions in Puducherry. The government is planning to develop six beaches for eco- tourism activities. Therefore, the project “Development of Eco Beaches in Puducherry” under the scheme of “Mega Destination” may be recommended for inclusion in the list of projects prioritised for 2014-15.”
Urging the Union government to release Rs. 100-rore grants, Mr. Rajavelu also said that the government had planned various activities to market the destination at the international level.
One of the focus areas was to create an infrastructure for international tourists, he said. Last month, the government at a meeting with the Union Tourism Ministry, had submitted its proposals for development of heritage area in Puducherry, Bharathi Park, beaches and infrastructure facilities.
“Our proposals are awaiting clearance from the Union Tourism Ministry. The Union Minister has assured us of releasing necessary funds for tourism projects,” Mr. Rajavelu told The Hindu .
