As many as 49 members belonging to Meenavar Viduthalai Vengaigal were arrested when they attempted to resort to a rail roko at the AFT railway gate in Mudaliarpet on Wednesday to register their strong protest against the unprovoked firing by the Sri Lankan navy on a fisherman from Rameswaram.

The protesters, led by Meenavar Viduthalai Vengaigal president Mangayarselvam, took out a rally from Singaravelar Statue towards the AFT railway gate in Mudaliarpet. They squatted on the tracks and attempted to block trains when the police rounded them up. They were released in the evening.
