Joint-Commissioner of the Delhi Traffic Police Anil Shukla on Wednesday gave tips to Puducherry police personnel in effective handling of traffic. He also gave them an overview of the modern techniques adopted in New Delhi.
Deputy Inspector-General of Police Jegadeesan Kannan and Senior Superintendent of Police Omvir Singh were present.
Mr. Shukla explained the mobile application introduced by the Delhi Traffic Police. The app available for download on Google Play Store provides traffic advisory/alerts and fare calculator for taxis and autorickshaws. Giving an example, he said how a citizen could file a complaint, using the app, against a taxi for refusing to ply, overcharging or even abusive behaviour. He also dwelled on the successful implementation of e-challan.
Taking into account the growing traffic challenge, the Union Territory has already signed an agreement with the Delhi Integrated Multi-Modal Transit System Limited (DIMTS), New Delhi, for preparing a Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP) to achieve hassle-free traffic.
According to the Transport Department, Puducherry is one of the most highly urbanised territories in the country and ranked fifth in urbanisation (68.33 per cent). It has 8.2 lakh registered motorised vehicles as per the State Register of vehicles. The availability of attractive social and physical infrastructure draws migrant population from hinterlands, resulting in an increase in traffic and transport problems, especially in urban areas.
At present, 60,000 vehicles are added to the already congested roads every year. Road accidents average out at 1,500 a year in the last five years and claim more than 200 lives a year.
