There are as many as 39,151 differently abled persons in Cuddalore district who have obtained national identity cards. Of them, 21,006 have been registered with the Differently abled Welfare Board, said Collector R. Kirlosh Kumar.

He was speaking at cultural events organised exclusively for differently abled persons here on Thursday. Mr. Kumar said that these persons were getting benefits under various welfare schemes.

He underscored the point that to encourage normal persons to get married to the differently abled, the government had introduced a marriage assistance scheme under which a sum of Rs 50,000 along with four gm of gold coin was being given away.

The cash component had been split into two parts: Rs 25,000 by way of cheque and Rs 25,000 by way of National Savings Certificate. The scheme was also meant for the marriage of differently abled persons (both partners).
