CPI(M) protests tariff hike

May 20, 2014 12:01 pm | Updated 12:01 pm IST - PUDUCHERRY:

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Monday staged a demonstration in front of the Raj Nivas demanding that the State government roll back the power tariff hike and the price hike of milk products supplied by Pondicherry Co Operative Milk Producers Union (Ponlait).

The demonstration was led by V. Perumal, party State unit secretary. The activists and leaders also raised slogans against the ruling government and called for an immediate roll back.

Taunting the ruling All India NR Congress for handing out such “gifts” to people who had voted for them, the CPI (M) said the government should avoid burdening the common man with the double blow. Pointing out that the power tariff was increased fourfold in last year, the CPI (M) said the tariff hike had greatly compounded the hardship of the people and forced several industries to shut shop and move out of the State. The present situation will seriously set back the socio-economic situation in the State, it said. Attributing the price hike of milk and milk products to administrative failure, the CPI (M) urged the government to adopt streamlining measures instead of resorting to a hike.
