CPI, VCK flay varsity for banning magazine

August 03, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:58 am IST - PUDUCHERRY:

The Communist Party of India (CPI) and the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) have strongly condemned the Pondicherry University’s decision to ban the magazine of the Students Council. They said that it was a step in the wrong direction.

Talking to reporters here on Tuesday, R. Viswanathan, secretary of the CPI said the University management should not have resorted to this step. There is nothing objectionable in the contents of the magazine.

The University management had actually financially supported (Rs. 2.5 lakh was granted) the publication, he said.

Mr. Viswanathan said that the BJP had unnecessarily politicised the issue which had led to the ban. All the articles only focus on the principles of secularism and spirit of the Indian Constitution and welfare of Dalits, minorities and other sections.

Instead of practically assessing the contents, the BJP had intervened and caused a wedge among the students and tarnished the image of the Students Council.

The management should have taken the issue to public at large and students and their views should have been obtained, he said.

The CPI and its alliance partners would soon write to President Pranab Mukherjee, Vice-President Hamid Ansari and seek their action to prevent the BJP from intruding into the University’s affairs.
