CPI (M) takes credit for cash for rice scheme withdrawal

April 24, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:41 am IST - Puducherry:

Taking a credit on the Government announcement to go back to distribution of free rice through public distribution system outlets, the Communist Party of India- Marxist (CPI-M) Puducherry unit said it was a victory for its struggle against the cash instead of rice scheme.

The party also cancelled its continuous protest near Legislative Assembly from April 23 demanding the government to withdraw its cash assistance instead of free rice scheme.

CPI (M) Central Committee Member and MLA K. Balakrishnan said the party welcomed the decision of the government.

In a statement, CPI (M) secretary R. Rajangam said that the unfulfilled promises given by the government during the 2011 elections were rehashed as budget. He also pointed out that there was no mention about the setting up of a welfare board for unorganised labourers or any announcement relating to generating employment opportunities for the youth.
