The Puducherry unit of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Monday demanded a comprehensive probe into the misuse of tsunami funds.

Addressing a press conference here, veteran CPI (M) leader T. Murugan said the government itself had admitted on the floor of the Assembly that funds allotted for tsunami rehabilitation were misused. In the wake of the admission, the government should order a probe to find out the truth and punish the guilty.

The Central Bureau of Investigation had already registered a related case and launched an investigation against a few former government employees.

Mr. Murugan said the government had recieved Rs. 856 crore for tsunami rehabilitation and of that only around Rs. 236 crore was spent. “Nobody knows where the remaining amount has gone. I have already filed a petition in the Court seeking an inquiry,” he said.

Party leader V. Perumal said the party would organise a protest on Thursday to press for streamlining medical eductation in the Union Territory. While the Deemed Universities have failed to provide seats to the government quota, private medical colleges are collecting heft fees, he said. To highlight the plight of students, the party would be holding a protest, he said. CPI (M) secretary R. Rajangam was also present at the briefing.
