In the wake of hospitalisation of 166 students of the Melkaaranai government high school who fell sick soon after eating noon meal there on June 18, Villupuram District Collector V. Sampath will form committees in each of the 22 panchayat unions to monitor the functioning of all the noon meal centres.

The students developed nausea, giddiness and stomach pain after taking the meal in which a lizard was reportedly sighted. Though they were discharged from hospital the same day, some of them were re-admitted on Thursday as the symptom continued. The Collector suspended the organiser of the noon meal centre and her assistant. The Collector, who convened a meeting of the organisers of 2,383 noon meal centres here on Friday, said the committees would regularly visit the centres and inspect the hygiene and quality of the commodities and vegetables.
