Sanjay Kishan Kaul, Chief Justice of Madras High Court, has appealed to the Bar to check certain unhealthy practices that have crept into the profession.
Addressing the regional conference of State Legal Services Authorities of Southern States co-hosted by the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) and State Legal Services Authorities (SALSA) on Saturday, Mr. Justice Kaul noted with concern that practices which were not healthy were prevalent in legal proceedings, especially those pertaining to matrimonial disputes.
Earlier, inaugurating the event, Justice Anil R. Dave, Supreme Court Judge and Executive Chairman of NALSA, hailed the functioning of Legal Services Authorities across the country.
Mr. Justice Dave said that mediation and conciliation efforts have been largely successful in conflict resolution and in bringing about amicable settlement of disputes.
Lieutenant Governor Kiran Bedi stressed the need for more Lok Adalats because there was a vacuum in addressing the grievances of the common man.
Chief Minister V. Narayanasamy pointed out that the job of Legal Services Authorities was important as more than 75 per cent of the people in the country do not have access to judicial system.
