The police busted a five-member gang of chain snatchers, including two juveniles, and recovered three motorcycles, 30 gm of gold jewellery and five mobile phones from them.
Addressing reporters here on Monday, Senior Superintendent of Police (Law and Order) Rajiv Ranjan said a special team comprising Inspectors Kalaiselvan and Karthikeyan was formed to nab the offenders.
The team, under the supervision of Superintendent of Police (West) Deivasigamani, increased surveillance in Puducherry and neighbouring districts of Tamil Nadu.
The team arrested M. Kirubanithi (19), S. Ranjith (19), S. Prabhakaran (19) and two other juveniles during a vehicle-check on Sunday. During inquiry, they confessed to being involved in several chain-snatching incidents in Puducherry.
The police recovered 30 gm of gold jewellery, three motorcycles and five mobile phones from the accused. They were produced before a local court and remanded to custody.
Mr. Ranjan has appealed to Jewellers in Puducherry to maintain a Register for purchased jewellery, including details on quantity of jewellery, name, address and valid identity proof of the seller .
