Former Union Minister and Senior Congress leader V. Narayanasamy on Monday said the Centre should give up the introduction of National Eligibility-cum Entrance Test (NEET) for admissions in medical courses.

SC’s recent ruling

In a statement, Mr. Narayanasamy said the Supreme Court’s recent ruling paved way for the introduction of NEET by the Centre from the forthcoming academic year and that introduction of it would have wider repercussion in the admission to medical colleges.

He said the Union Government should approach the Supreme Court again to exempt NEET for the admissions in the medical colleges run by State governments in the interest of poor, middle class students who like to study in such institutions.

Mr. Narayanasamy also said he had written letters urging Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda to give up the idea of conducting NEET for the admission to medical colleges in Union Territories.

He urged the Lieutenant Governor A.K. Singh to appeal to the Union Government to give up the idea of introducing NEET in the interest of Puducherry students.
