Call for CBI probe into Centac irregularities

October 17, 2014 01:17 pm | Updated May 23, 2016 04:12 pm IST - PUDUCHERRY:

Pressure has been mounting on the government to order a ‘fair’ probe into the alleged irregularities in admissions conducted by the Central Admission Committee (Centac) to professional courses.

Recently, the AIADMK raised the issue in the Legislative Assembly after it emerged that a few students from other states submitted fake nativity certificates of Puducherry and got admission. Leader of the Opposition V. Vaithilingam on Thursday said the government should order a probe by either judiciary or the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into alleged irregularities.

Addressing media persons here, Mr. Vaithilingam said the government had earlier stipulated that the candidate should be a resident in Puducherry for at least five years.

Mr. Vaithilingam added the present All India NR Congress Government relaxed those conditions. Hence, he said, revenue officials alone should not be held responsible for the irregularities and a fair probe alone would bring out truth on who all involved in this.

Meanwhile, G. Sugumaran, Secretary of Federation for People’s Rights said the probe by CBCID was unacceptable since several government officials were said to have been involved.

He said the government has been trying to hide the issue and said the government should order a CBI probe as demanded by political parties and social organisations.
