Volunteers of the Puducherry unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) staged a demonstration on Jawaharlal Nehru Street to on Wednesday in against what it called the anti-people policies in the budget.

V. Saminathan, president of the BJP, said the budget had failed to address the problem of unemployment. The farm sector was in the doldrums in the Union Territory. There was no mention about small and medium scale industries that had been facing closure over the last 15 years.

The budget also did not propose any concrete steps to control prices in essential commodities and financial package to support the Anglo French Textiles (AFT), Swadeshi and Bharathi mills. It had also failed to take note of the crisis faced by several public sector undertakings.

The budget had no vision, Mr. Saminathan said and added that there was no announcement on improving the livelihood of the common man. It had failed to address the key departments of health and education. Instead, the government’s focus was on increasing the number of liquor shops in the UT.
