Members of the Puducherry Bread Milk Workers Association staged a protest in front of the Directorate of School Education here demanding regularisation of services.

A spokesperson of the association said that the workers should be given part-time jobs in schools.

Under the present system they fall under the category of casual workers without any benefits.

The salary of the workers had also been reduced from Rs.4000 to Rs.2000 and they are forced to do other work as well.

Though a circular was issued by the Department of School Education, appointment orders were not issued to the employees.

The employees have demanded payment directly by the Department of School Education and their categorisation as government employees under the service condition of the department. Later, a few workers met officials of the Education Department who assured to take action.

The bread and milk scheme launched in 2002 by Congress president Sonia Gandhi was being implemented by the Department of School Education and the Pondicherry Cooperative Milk Producers’ Union.
