To keep the Boulevard area clean, the Puducherry Municipality has issued a notification restricting the movement of stray cattle within the area.
“Any violation of this notification if found, appropriate action will be taken against defaulter under section 449 of Municipalities Act, 1973 and the stray cattle confiscated by Puducherry Municipality and they will be handed over to Government-recognised Goshala, either in Tamil Nadu or Puducherry permanently,” said R. Chandirasekaran, Puducherry Municipal Commissioner.
The Boulevard area of Puducherry Municipality covers the Goubert Street (East), Sardar Patel Street (North), Anna Salai (West) and Subbaiya Salai (South). The Boulevard limits, comprises nine wards including the prime attraction tourist in the Promenade Beach, Raj Nivas, Assembly Hall, temples, churches and mosques, Chief Secretariat, museum and market places.
The notification said in recent past, the Boulevard area is ever crowded with people and vehicles during most of the time, due to inflow and outflow of men and materials. Within Boulevard area, no licensed cattle owner (mandatory) or veterinary institution is registered as per Puducherry Municipalities Act, 1973.
The stray cattle within Boulevard area causes threat to the public. Traffic disturbance due to the ruminants leads to traumatic injuries and sometimes even death.
