Lying in neglect: Lieutenant Governor Kiran Bedi has sought an action plan to revive waterbodies after an inspection of a pond in Vannankulam.

Lt. Governor Kiran Bedi has asked engineering wings of municipalities to take pre-emptive steps against deterioration of waterbodies.

Ms. Bedi, who inspected the pond at Govindanpet in Vannankulam following a complaint at a recent Open House that it has not been maintained properly and was filled with sewage and garbage, called for expediting the revival of the waterbody.

The Oulgaret Commissioner said the flow of sewage into the pond would be stopped by constructing a U-drain and diverting the same to the main drain.

Ms. Bedi also advised that the engineering wings of Municipalities and Commune Panchayats should identify such issues beforehand and come up with practical solutions to avoid such complaints from the public.

She suggested that a loan from NABARD/HUCO/other financial institutions or financial assistance under Government of India Schemes may be availed to revive the Vannankulam pond and also the other ponds which need revival.

The local bodies have been tasked to work out a comprehensive proposal for the revival of ponds. A meeting is to be convened shortly in this regard and also to explore seeking aid from financial institutions and Government of India.

The Lt. Governor also visited the Municipal Market at Gandhinagar which has remained idle after construction and also inspected encroachments by hawkers at Vazhdavur Road even after they were allotted space in a newly built market complex in Gandhinagar.
