While the bandh called by farmers associations affected normal life in the neighbouring districts of Cuddalore and Villupuram it was business as usual in Puducherry. It had no impact on the supply of vegetables and other essential commodities in the city.
Banks, business establishments and transport services remained unaffected. Government, private buses and autorickshaws too plied normally. Attendance at private and government offices remained unaffected. Vegetable markets in the city remained open throughout the day. “Everyday over 200 trucks transport vegetables from Bangalore and Tamil Nadu to the Goubert vegetable market in the city.
The market received the supplies on Friday night and there is no problem for the next few days,” said a vegetable vendor.
However, the bandh was near total in suburban Thirukkanur and bordering areas of Cuddalore and Villupuram. Commuters travelling to neighbouring districts were stranded as a majority of the private buses remained off the roads.
Peaceful
The bandh was total and peaceful in the outlying region of Karaikal. Both the ruling AINRC and the opposition Congress had extended their support to the bandh called by farmers associations in Karaikal.
Farmers in Karaikal are entirely dependent on the Cauvery water as the region is located at the tail-end of the delta.
