Approval for admission to medical college will be obtained soon: Rangasamy

Hopes that Statehood will be granted to Union Territory

June 28, 2014 12:24 pm | Updated November 16, 2021 07:07 pm IST - PUDUCHERRY:

Chief Minister N. Rangasamy on Friday said the approval for admission of students in Indira Gandhi Government Medical College and Research Institute would be obtained very soon.

Addressing the media after launching a website of the Government School Teachers Federation of Union Territory of Puducherry, Mr. Rangasamy said: “After the inspection, a team of the Medical Council of India (MCI) had pointed out certain deficiencies in the college. Over sixty professors have been appointed and now a compliance report has been submitted. As Lok Sabha elections came in between, we could not recruit the professors.”

Expressing the hope that the BJP government at the Centre would accord Statehood to Union Territory, Mr.Rangasamy said he had already made a representation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh in this regard when he called on them in Delhi last month.

Mr. Rangasamy said that he would soon take a delegation of MLAs and leaders of all political parties to New Delhi and meet Mr.Modi and reiterate the plea. He pointed out that the State Assembly had passed resolutions seeking statehood.

Asked whether he still wanted to recall the Lieutenant Governor Virendra Kataria, Mr.Rangasamy said cryptically “I am in the same mood as the Union government is in.”

When asked about the Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh’s comment financial position of Union Territory, Mr. Rangasamy responded by providing a lowdown on the various welfare schemes being implemented by the Government.

Meanwhile, All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam State Legislative Party president A.Anbalagan alleged that the functioning of the Government had been paralysed due to the conflict between the Lieutenant Governor Mr. Kataria and Chief Minister Mr.Rangasamy. Rather than fighting each other, they should work in a constructive manner for the development of the Union Territory, he said.

Mr. Anbalagan also wanted the State Legislative Assembly to be convened soon to discuss and resolve the medical admissions imbroglio.
