January 07, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 10:45 am IST - PUDUCHERRY:

A woman undertrial allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself in the Kalapet Central Prison here on Tuesday. The victim was identified as Ambika (45) of MGR Nagar in Karaikal.

According to the police, Ambika was found hanging from the grill of a window in the bathroom in the women’s barracks in the prison. The incident came to light when other undertrials found her dead and alerted the prison staff. Police sources said Ambika was arrested in October last year after she allegedly married off her minor step-daughter to a 45-year-old man.

She was in a dejected mood as she was unable to get bail. A case has been registered and further investigations are on.
