The opposition AIADMK has demanded that the Centre conduct a high-level probe to study the working of all the seven private medical colleges in Puducherry and whether the colleges fulfilled the norms laid down by the Government in the wake of an income tax raid on one of the institutions the other day.

'Flouting norms'

Talking to reporters here on Saturday, AIADMK legislature party leader A. Anbalagan said the recent raid conducted by the Income Tax Department on the premises of the Mahatma Gandhi Medical College and Research Institute and also at the residence of a senior administrative official of the institution on Friday had exposed how the colleges flouted norms and other statutory provisions.

Mr. Anbalagan said the Government had failed to rein in the medical colleges. These colleges collected hefty donation and capitation fees from students.

The raid on the institution is only a tip of the iceberg. The Centre should depute a high-level committee to probe into the working of all the seven colleges and the system of collection of donation from students.

Role of L-G

The Lieutenant Governor Kiran Bedi should persuade the Centre to order a high level probe at the earliest. The amount that has been seized during the raid is mostly the amount that has been collected from students for the current year.

Mr. Anbalagan said that none of the colleges had earmarked 50 per cent seats under government quota either in the undergraduate (MBBS) or postgraduate level. Students had to pay Rs.1.5 to Rs.2 Crore for a PG seat , he claimed.

Wake up call

The Government should take the IT raid on the institution as a wake up call to ensure that the colleges collected the same fees for students admitted under government quota as prescribed by the administration.

The colleges have flouted norms and other statutory provisions, charges Anbalagan
