The Medical Council of India (MCI) has issued directions to seven private medical colleges and deemed universities to discharge 95 students who were admitted to postgraduate medical courses bypassing the common counselling conducted by the Centralised Admission Committee (Centac).

The MCI order means that the admission of these students virtually stands cancelled.

Break-up of seats

The statement issued from Raj Nivas detailed that the 95 students, included 16 from Pondicherry Institute of Medical Sciences, 13 from Aarupadai Veedu Medical College, 15 from Manakula Vinayakar Medical College, 23 from Mahatma Gandhi Medical College and Research Institute, 21 students from Vinayaka Mission’s Medical College, six from Sri Venkateshwara Medical College, and one from Sri Lakshmi Narayana Institute of Medical Sciences.

It said: “It may be recalled that many students who were given provisional allotment by Centac were refused admission in these colleges and the affected students called on Lieutenant Governor and gave written and oral complaints.

Exorbitant fee

“The main allegation was that the self-financed medical colleges allegedly denied admission even after paying the fee fixed by the statutory fee committee and that the deemed universities refused admission allegedly demanding exorbitant fee of ₹40 lakh to ₹50 lakh.”

Lieutenant Governor Kiran Bedi had forwarded the list of students who were admitted in each of the seven medical colleges to the MCI after receiving details from the Director of Health and Family Welfare, who is the nodal officer of the Union Territory.

“The list sent to MCI wherein a separate list showing the discrepancies made by medical colleges in admitting students to postgraduate medical courses was enclosed.

The monitoring committee of MCI has carefully examined the list of students admitted by private colleges with that of the students allotted seats through Centac under common counselling. Such students who did not find a place in the list of students allotted seats through Centac have been directed to be discharged by the colleges concerned,” the statement said.
