A 65- year-old man was arrested in Puducherry on Saturday night for sexually abusing an eight-year-old girl at Lawspet. Police said the accused lured the girl with a chocolate and took her to his relative’s house and sexually abused her.

The Lawspet police have registered a case under Protection of Children Against Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. The victim has been sent to the government hospital for medical examination.

Child Welfare Committee (CWC) Chairperson Vidyaa Ramkumar said that schools should create awareness among girl children about physical contacts with bad intentions. “Children should be made aware about physical contacts made by a stranger or even a known person with a bad intention. They should be told that hugs and kisses, if asked to be kept secret, is unsafe,” she said.

She added that more schools should come forward to create awareness among children so that they could seek help in such circumstances.
