A class of 11 special children of Satya Special School at the Satya Centre for Vocational Training Centre in Rainbow Nagar was ecstatic on a Thursday morning. They had cleared all the three subjects in the SSLC examination with flying colours.
Parents of all the 11 children were taken by surprise when the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) results were announced last week. At least five children have scored more than 75 per cent. Out of the 11 students, nine have scored more than 60 per cent.
“My child was in a private school till VIII{+t}{+h}standard. She had to face a lot of difficulties and humiliation. Hence, we decided to enrol her in the Satya Special School. They do not compete with other children here. Instead, help each other in their studies,” said Parameswari.S.
Considered misfit in the mainstream schools, these children were isolated and jeered at for being slow. They were moved to Satya Special School for being unable to cope with the exam-oriented school education.
Ensconced in their classroom, where a thermocol plate clock and charts made by the special children hung on the walls, they were now learning, the children are now learning Business Studies and English. “They will give their exams for these two subjects next April. We combine practical lessons with teaching, this helps them understand and remember,” says Kamalakannan, school teacher.
All the 11 children here chose painting, data entry, home science, business studies and English. “We want to pursue education and graduate,” said 15-year old Ajay.
