Mumbai: BMC Commissioner Ajoy Mehta on Wednesday held a meeting with the General Manager, Western Railway to discuss pre-monsoon preparedness. Among the issues discussed were waterlogging and garbage on tracks and hawkers near railway stations. Such meetings were usually held only with the Central Railway till now, as the Main Line witnesses the most waterlogging.

With the monsoon due sometime in mid-June, the civic body is undertaking measures to ensure citizens face less hassles.

Every year, the BMC holds meetings with all stakeholders, including the city police, MMRDA, State government departments as part of its disaster mitigation programme.

The WR and BMC have agreed to jointly clean and widen 43 culverts between Churchgate and Dahisar. The WR has been asked to expedite work on a stormwater drain near Elphinstone Road station, which has seen little progress. The drain, once operational, will reduce waterlogging in Fitwala Lane.

The WR will also work with BMC to divert a water main at Bandra, which will widen the Chamdawadi nullah and prevent waterlogging in Jay Bharat society and Railway Colony in Khar.

Every year, when the rains hit the city and its suburbs, civic authorities bear the brunt of citizens’ire, as waterlogging takes place due to poorly-maintained drains and nullahs. Suburban railway services are hit as well.
