Mumbai: A 32-year-old woman allegedly killed her mentally challenged twins before ending her life at their residence in Kalwa on Saturday. Police said the incident came to light when Sandeep Kadam (35), who works as a manager with a private firm in Thane, reached home around 6 p.m. When repeated ringing of the doorbell did not elicit response, he opened the door with his key and found his wife Archana dead. Their seven-year-old sons, Sarthak and Varad, were lying on the bed lifeless.

Mr. Kadam raised an alarm and took all three to Shivaji Hospital in Kalwa, where they were declared dead before admission. The police found a suicide note written by Archana in Marathi, addressed to her husband. “You have seen what we have been through for the last seven years, and you will understand why I am doing this,” she said in her note.

“The twins were mentally challenged and Archana was pained at their condition as well as worried about their future,” said DCP (Zone I) D.S. Swami, Thane police.

The police will be recording Mr. Kadam’s detailed statement to check if there had been any signs in Archana’s behaviour recently to indicate she was contemplating suicide. According to preliminary inquiries, Archana's behaviour was normal when Mr. Kadam left for work in the morning. She was last seen by some neighbours around 2 p.m.

Senior PI Mukhtar Bagwan, Kalwa police station said, “There were no external injuries on the bodies of the two children, and we are awaiting the post mortem reports to know the cause of death. We have posthumously booked Archana for murder under the IPC.” The police will file a summary report in court seeking the case be closed as the accused is deceased.
