A 28-year-old woman was found murdered at her house in Colaba on Wednesday afternoon. The Colaba police have launched a probe into the case.

The victim, Shweta Tandel, stayed with her husband Mahendra, his brother Chetan and friend Hitesh on the first floor of a ground plus one structure in the Sunder Nagri locality in Colaba. Ganga Bhandari, who stayed on the ground floor of the building, said Mahendra tried calling Shweta on Wednesday morning. When he could not reach her, he called up Ms. Bhandari and asked her to check on Shweta.

Ms. Bhandari said, “Mahendra called me at around 1 p.m. I went up to the first floor and found the door bolted from outside. I presumed no one was at home, but I could hear the sound of the air conditioner. So I unbolted the door and went inside. I found Shweta lying on the bathroom floor in a pool of blood. No one was at home at the time.”

Ms. Bhandari informed the Colaba police, who rushed a team to the spot. Shweta was taken to St. George Hospital near Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus where she was declared dead before admission. The post-mortem examination revealed her throat had been slit.

The Colaba police have registered a case of murder against unknown persons under the Indian Penal Code. “We are investigating the case. There are a number of missing dots which need to be connected,” said Dr. Manoj Kumar Sharma, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Zone I.

Shweta’s body was taken to her home in Palghar and cremated on Thursday.
