Woman, aide with 32 kg ganja arrested

Navi Mumbai: The anti-narcotics cell on Tuesday arrested a woman and her friend near Nelco Company in Turbhe MIDC for peddling drugs.

Police sub-inspector Ajit Gole received a tip-off about the duo, identified as Salma Suleiman Shaikh (30) and Kisan Mallesh Pawar.

“Our team nabbed them and recovered two sacks containing ganja,” senior police inspector Sunil Bajare said. Drugs weighing 32.77 kg is worth ₹4.17 lakh.

“The woman, a house help, had come in an autorickshaw along with her associate, who is a taxi driver. Both had one sack of ganja each. We are investigating the source of the drugs and to whom they had come to deliver,” Mr. Gole said.

Ms. Shaikh’s husband was arrested by the Thane unit of of the cell six months ago, and is in jail following which Ms. Shaikh took up his job. The couple has a daughter and a son.

According to the police, Ms. Shaikh and Mr. Pawar are residents of Reay Road, and hence they know each other.

The duo was produced before court on Wednesday and remanded in police custody till January 12.

They were charged under Sections 8(c), 20 and 29 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act.
