Navi Mumbai: Two friends, who were in Class XI at Sainath College, Vashi, drowned in a pond at Ghansoli on Wednesday evening.

The 17-year-old students were identified as Rahul Langur Jaiswal, a resident of Talavali village, and Ayush Brijnath Tiwari, a resident of Arjunwadi, Ghansoli. The duo along with their two friends went for swimming at the pond near Sai temple.

“Because of the rain, the water level had increased which they probably did not realise. Since their friends did not know swimming, they couldn’t help them. Their friends informed their parents and the police after which a fire brigade team started a search. The bodies were fished out and handed over to the municipal hospital for post-mortem,” said sub inspector Snehal Shinde from Rabale police station.

A case of accidental death has been registered.
