Two people were killed and three others were injured when a tree fell on them near Metro Cinema around 5.30 p.m. on Sunday.

With this incident, tree falls have claimed six lives in the city this year.

The five victims were walking on M.G. Road when the tree, which was on the footpath, fell on them. Onlookers took them to the State-run GT Hospital.

Bastian P.V., who was in his seventies, was declared brought dead, while Rajendra Ramchandra Singh (60) was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit in critical condition and passed away later. Salimuddin Hafuddin Shaikh (48) has been admitted to the surgical ward, while Ram Vilas Sohani (55) and Santosh Rajendra Singh (26) were treated for minor injuries and discharged.

“Both deceased had head injuries,” said a doctor from the hospital.

Since the tree was on a footpath, it was the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) responsibility to trim it before the monsoon. Civic officials said they had trimmed the tree before monsoon.

The tree was supposed to be cut for road-widening work later this year.
