Two separate railway accidents left one dead and one injured on Thursday. Both incidents took place on the Central line: one at Vidyavihar and the other between Sion and Matunga stations.

In the first incident, 23-year-old Tejashree Vaidya fell into a drain next to the tracks at around 9.30 a.m. between Sion and Matunga stations. Government Railway Police officials said Vaidya was a resident of Vikhroli and worked at Elphinstone. She was on her way to K.C. College to give an exam.

Nitin Bobade, Senior Police Inspector, Dadar GRP station, said, “Two of our staff members immediately rushed to the spot after being intimated by the control room. We found her in the drain, with only her head above the water. She was crying for help.” Mr. Bobade said the drain was quite large and pitch black, making it hard for officials to locate her. He said, “The drain would have easily been six-feet deep and she could have drowned in it.”

The police with the help of porters rescued her from the drain and rushed her to Sion hospital, where she is undergoing treatment.

In another incident, a 17-year-old girl was run over by a train while crossing the tracks at 11 a.m at Vidyavihar. Police officials found her in an unconscious state and rushed her to Rajawadi hospital, where she was declared dead on arrival.

Kurla GRP officials said the girl was identified as Jyoti Verma, a resident of Vikhroli and student of Somaiya College. Mahesh Balwantrao, Senior Police Inspector, said they are scanning the CCTV footage of the incident.
