Mumbai: The number of ticketless travellers in Central and Western Railway trains has increased as compared to last year.

Central Railway (CR) has registered 2.08 lakh cases of ticketless travelling and collected ₹8.99 crore as fine in August 2017, as against the 1.78 lakh cases registered and ₹7.12 crore collected in the same period last year. Similarly, Western Railway (WR) registered 86,909 cases and collected ₹3.10 crore this year. Last year, it registered 83,610 cases and collected ₹2.94 crore.

CR and WR officials said they have intensified efforts against ticketless travellers. Sunil Udasi, chief public relation officer, Central Railway, said, “We keep carrying out campaigns and discourage passengers from travelling without tickets. Officials keep close watch on the revenue loss due to ticketless travelling.”

In CR trains, 14.07 lakh cases of ticketless travel and unbooked luggage cases were registered from April to August 2017, as against 11.4 lakh cases last year. CR earned ₹72.14 crore from the cases this year, as compared to ₹55.88 crore last year.

The number of people impersonating ticket examiners is also on the rise. This year, eight people have been arrested for collecting fines from ticketless travellers. In the last one week, three fake ticket examiners were arrested from Central and Western Railway stations.
