Ten people lost their lives and 12 others were seriously injured after a truck ferrying them from Karnataka to Maharashtra lost control and toppled over in Sangli in the early hours of Friday morning.
According to the Tasgaon police, the incident occurred around 3:30 a.m. on Friday, between the Manejuri and Yogewadi villages on the Tasgaon-Mahakal highway.
“The truck was filled with stone tiles, which the driver was bringing to Karad. On the way, he picked up a total of 32 daily wage labourers who were going to different parts of Maharashtra to seek jobs. Some of the survivors told us in their statements that due to the MSRTC (Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation) strike, they were hard-pressed for means of transport and hitched a ride on the truck,” said Police Inspector Anil Tanpure, Tasgaon Police Station.
Mr. Tanpure said the overloaded truck lost control while negotiating a turn at high speed just after Manejuri. Passing motorists and other eye witnesses immediately called the Sangli Police Control Room and the information was relayed to the Tasgaon police.
