The students of Universal High School, Dahisar, are set to attend classes from Thursday after their parents and the school management struck a deal devised by the education department.
Last week, 20 students were handed letters informing them that they were being disenrolled for non-compliance of the school’s admission process to the next grade and not paying the fees applicable for the academic year 2017-2018.
A parent on condition of anonymity said, “The school management said they would allow students to attend classes on humanitarian grounds. We are waiting for the decision of the education department on the fee hike. We will abide by their decision. Right now, we have accepted a compromise formula under which we have agreed to send our students back to school.”
B.B. Chavan, education inspector of South Mumbai, said the parents have agreed to deposit the hiked fee amount in an escrow account (a temporary account held by a third party to enable transaction between two parties). Mr. Chavan said, “This is a plan proposed by the management of the school. The parents will deposit the increased fee in the escrow account and they will have to wait for the final decision of the Divisional Fee Regulatory Committee. If the decision is in favour of the parents, they will get a refund.”
Jesus Lall, chairman of the school, said, “We will not allow any student who has not paid the hiked fee to enter the premises of the school. They have been disenrolled.”
