Maharashtra will soon frame a new policy to regularise as many as 3,000 illegal gymnasiums, ostensibly to condone previous violations by State Minister for Housing Ravindra Waikar. Paving the way for regularisation of illegal gyms across the city, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Friday announced that the new rules will take into account the floor space index (FSI) violations by the structures on private land, especially those constructed using MLA funds.

The rules are likely to give special relief to the Shiva Sena minister, who has been put on the mat by the Opposition for illegal construction of an additional floor in a gymnasium at Jogeshwari. “These (on which the gymnasiums stand) are not privately used properties and we have no problem in regularising them,” he said while admittedly giving a clean chit to Waikar. Mr. Fadnavis was speaking during a debate on the functioning of municipal corporations on the last day of the monsoon session of the Legislative Assembly.

On the government’s promise to make Mumbai digital-friendly, Mr. Fadnavis said as many as 1,200 Wi-Fi hotspots having 20 mbps connections will be set up at 500 tourist places by November 2016.
