Mumbai: The police on Tuesday said inquiries so far had not found any substance in reports of an injured woman being molested after the stampede on the foot overbridge (FOB) at Elphinstone Road railway station on September 29. The stampede on the FOB’s staircase claimed 23 lives. A video showing a man purportedly molesting the woman, who died of her injuries, had later gone viral.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (Dadar Division) Sunil Deshmukh said a Prabhadevi resident’s statement has been recorded, who is seen standing behind the man accused of molestation. “The witness has said in his statement that the woman's upper body was protruding through the FOB’s railing and that the man in the video was supporting her with his thigh while trying to pull her out at the same time, and not molesting her. We also studied a longer version of the video, which corresponds with the witness’s statement,” Mr. Deshmukh said.

The man in the video has not been identified yet, and efforts are on to identify him, police said.
