Six yards of joy

What happens to the cupboards full of old clothes when they have to be replaced by festive attire? ConnectFor, a non-profit that connects NGOs to volunteers, has taken upon itself the task of encouraging women to donate their sarees towards making this festive season brighter for those who cannot buy new clothes.

Shloka Mehta, one of the founders of ConnectFor, was inspired by the story of a man in Kolkata who had to deal with a cupboard full of saris when his mother had passed on, and together with a friend, they were able to reach out to mentally challenged women through an NGO. For Daan Utsav, the saris will be collected on October 8, and after a quality check, distributed through five partner NGOs between October 9 and 14. Mr. Mehta estimates that about 1,000 sarees will be collected.

One of the events will be at Animedh Charitable Trust, which provides entrepreneurial skills to women. A batch of 150 graduating women will be given the sarees. Says Mr. Mehta, “We will also send out emails to the sari donors so that they can participate in some of the distribution events.”

* You can donate your sarees from Oct 2 — 8 at Orra stores in Bandra (W), Ghatkopar (W), Hughes Road, Malad (W), Powai and Vashi Sector 17; The Blow Dry Bar in Marine Drive; ConnectFor office, Opera House

* To donate, send a message on WhatsApp at +917977347851 or email at contact@connectfor.org
