Mumbai: The Rabale police have arrested a 60-year-old serial robber, who would steal from bank customers on the pretext of helping them count currency notes.
Abbas Ali Mansoor Jaffari Irani, a Mumbra resident, was arrested on Friday after the cashier of Indian Bank, Airoli branch, was robbed on August 21. “On that day, the accused did not find any customers in the bank and so went to the cashier. He sweet-talked her into showing notes of a particular series. The cashier handed him a bundle of 80 notes of ₹2,000, and while he pretended to look for the series in the bundle, he managed to take 18 notes and left. The cashier realised that he had stolen the money after he left, and she immediately approached us,” Assistant Police Inspector Sachin Powar said.
The police, after getting CCTV camera footage, alerted their informers and traced Mr. Irani to Rashid Compound in Mumbra. “He suffers from cancer, and none of his four sons look after him. Hence, he had to resort to stealing for treating himself. He is wanted by several police stations for similar crimes in Mumbai and Thane,” Mr. Powar said.
